Mowing Heights for Hutchinson Lawns

Hutchinson’s clay-heavy soil and hot, dry summers mean cut height matters more here than in milder climates. We adjust by grass type and season:

Grass TypeSpring/Fall HeightSummer Height
Tall Fescue3–3.5"3.5–4" (drought stress)
Buffalo Grass2–2.5"2.5–3"
Bermuda1.5–2"1.5–2"
Zoysia2–2.5"2–3"
Yellowing between the veins on new growth? That’s often iron chlorosis, common in Hutchinson’s alkaline, clay-heavy soil — not a mowing problem. We can test soil pH and recommend a fix during your visit.

Lawn Mowing FAQ

Weekly during peak growth (April–June, September–October); biweekly is fine during the hot, slower-growth stretch of July–August.

Following the 1/3 rule — never removing more than a third of the blade height in one cut — keeps fescue and buffalo lawns healthier and more drought-tolerant through Kansas summers.

We mulch clippings by default — they break down and return nitrogen to the soil.

If clippings are heavy (after a rain delay, for example) we bag instead so they don’t clump and smother the grass. Bagging on request is available at no extra charge.

We reschedule within 24–48 hours, weather permitting.

Mowing wet grass tears the blade tips and can leave clumps, so we wait for the lawn to dry rather than mow through it.

No — most customers aren’t home. We just need gate access if you have a fenced yard.
No contracts. Service is billed monthly and you can cancel or change frequency anytime.
